We face disproportionate rates of poverty, homelessness, substance abuse, incarceration, mental health challenges, violence, and discrimination. Our families are often fractured by fear, bigotry, and ignorance. Pride is a coming together where we can look around and see family, see community in the world- in tangible ways - and feel SEEN and cared for, especially when care seems to be in especially short supply. . . The do-it-yourself self-care ideology that is plastered across the internet is inherently ableist and capitalist. It keeps the burden on folks who are struggling to lift their own selves up out of pain, depression, trauma, and poverty. . . Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating that we don't care for ourselves or treat ourselves. I do believe in Audrey Lorde's words: "Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare". That political act for queer and trans folks is where our liberation lives and breathes. Imagine the political impact of communities of colour, queers, disabled, fat & trans folks building a system and structure of collective care. Imagine the possibility for transformation. . . Sometimes we need a hand up. Sometimes we need a hand-out. Sometimes we need some validation that this system is broken, that things aren't alright, and that someone is rooting for you. And sometimes we have to dance it out, be loud, be proud, and shout our truths from the rooftop. . Pride is ALL of that, and more . 🥐💜the Treat Yo- Self💜🥐 .
